DID YOU KNOW? SPIDER CRABS!
|
You're probably aware by now that I am an avid scuba diver - I have shared videos from some of my dives through here and our facebook page. We are incredibly lucky to live in the vicinity of Port Phillip Bay, where we have amazing diving. One of the most spectacular events that I have been lucky enough to witness is the migration of the Spider Crabs, where they gather in their thousands to take part in their annual moult,
normally in early-mid June around the full moon.
|
This natural phenomena attracts natural predators such as octopus and giant rays, which are a marvel to watch. Unfortunately in recent years they have also attracted large numbers of "fishermen" who indiscriminately scoop these creatures out of the shallow waters when they are at their most vulnerable. On one of our dives this year, we were horrified to find the seabed below the pier devoid of crabs and instead littered with chicken carcasses,
abandoned crab pots and plastic zip ties. If you're interested, please take the time to read and sign the petition that is in place to introduce protections for these iconic animals.
